Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Type 14 pistol was produced by three Nagoya Arsenal–affiliated manufacturers: the Toriimatsu and Chigusa branches of the Nagoya Arsenal, and the privately operated Nambu Rifle Manufacturing Company (later renamed Chuo Kogyo after a 1936 merger) in Kokubunji, Tokyo. All Nagoya Arsenal pistols bear the Nagoya Arsenal emblem, a circle enclosing a top-heavy “8” that represents the shachi, mythical roof ornaments of Nagoya Castle, Nagoya’s iconic landmark. Kokubunji pistols are notable for also displaying the company logo, a stylized version of the kanji Nan/Nam, honoring Lt. Gen. Kijiro Nambu, the legendary arms designer and company founder. Initial production at all facilities formed an “Original Series” with no series marker. Once serial numbers reached 99,999, the factories followed standard Japanese practice and began a new run with a series designation.

The Toriimatsu branch, the most prolific Type 14 manufacturer, introduced this system with its First Series, marked by a katakana character resembling an upside-down “Y” in a circle—the Japanese “i”, pronounced “ee,” the first letter of the traditional phonetic order. Its pistols display two symbols in front of the serial number: the Nagoya Arsenal emblem and the series marker. When this serial block was exhausted, a Second Series followed, marked with “ro”, the second letter. Serial numbers for Toriimatsu First Series pistols run from roughly 50,000 to 99,999.
