The Colt M1911, also known as the 1911 or Colt Government (in Colt-produced models), is one of the most iconic pistols in American history. Designed by John Browning, it is a single-action, recoil-operated, semi-automatic handgun chambered in .45 ACP. Officially adopted by the U.S. military in March 1911, it was initially designated as the Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911. In 1926, an updated version—featuring improved ergonomics and other refinements—was introduced as the M1911A1.
