Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this historic WWII-era semi-automatic pistol for auction; this is the CMP Service Grade Colt 1911A1!
The 1911 CMP program is highly restricted due to limited availability, as there were not enough pistols to meet the demand. As a result, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) conducted a lottery to determine who could purchase one. Additionally, the program has a lifetime purchase limit, meaning that once selected, an individual is only eligible to buy a single 1911 pistol throughout their lifetime. This scarcity and the unique nature of the lottery system make these pistols highly sought after and collectible.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt M1911, also known as the 1911 or Colt Government (in Colt-produced models), is one of the most iconic pistols in American history. Designed by John Browning, it is a single-action, recoil-operated, semi-automatic handgun chambered in .45 ACP. Officially adopted by the U.S. military in March 1911, it was initially designated as the Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911. In 1926, an updated version—featuring improved ergonomics and other refinements—was introduced as the M1911A1. This model remained in service through multiple major conflicts including World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, eventually being replaced by the Beretta M9 in 1985. Despite this, the 1911A1 remained in use by certain military units well into the late 1980s and continues to see service with U.S. Special Forces, the Marine Corps, and elements of the U.S. Navy, proving the design’s enduring legacy.

The M1911’s influence goes far beyond military history. It revolutionized handgun design by introducing the short-recoil operating system, which became the dominant mechanism for nearly all modern semi-automatic centerfire pistols. Its robust construction, intuitive design, and reliable performance made it not only a battlefield staple but also a favorite among civilian shooters. Today, the 1911 remains immensely popular in competitive shooting circles, including disciplines such as the International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) and the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC). Although modern variants and reproductions are widely available, genuine U.S. military-issued M1911 and M1911A1 pistols remain highly coveted by collectors due to their historical significance and limited civilian availability over the decades.
This scarcity began to change with the involvement of the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), a federally chartered non-profit organization tasked with promoting firearm safety and marksmanship. In recent years, the CMP began selling surplus M1911 and M1911A1 pistols stored at the Anniston Army Depot in Alabama. Through a lottery-based system, qualified civilians could apply to purchase one of these authentic military pistols. The application process is straightforward but thorough, requiring proof of CMP club membership, proper identification, and notarized documentation. Buyers choose from three condition grades—Rack, Field, and Service—each reflecting the level of wear and pricing accordingly. The program does not allow buyers to select specific manufacturers or configurations, but for many enthusiasts, simply owning a genuine piece of American military history makes this blind-purchase experience well worth it.
