Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Enfield No. 4 Mk I* produced by Small Arms Limited at Long Branch, Ontario, represents Canada’s significant contribution to Allied small arms production during World War II. Adopted in 1941 as an evolution of the SMLE No. 1 Mk III, the No. 4 series featured a heavier barrel, simplified sights, and a stronger receiver, optimized for mass production while maintaining accuracy and rugged reliability. The Long Branch plant, purpose-built to supply the Canadian military and Commonwealth forces, began full-scale production of the No. 4 Mk I* in 1941, with the “*” designation signifying a simplified bolt release system—a manufacturing expedient that eliminated the bolt release catch of earlier No. 4 Mk I rifles. This modification made the rifle quicker and cheaper to produce without compromising performance. The Canadian-made rifles were distinguished by precise machining, high-quality walnut or birch stocks, and the “Long Branch” marking on the receiver wall, along with year of production and serial number. Functionally, the No. 4 Mk I* retained the hallmark features that made the Lee-Enfield series a soldier’s favorite: a smooth, rear-locking bolt action capable of extremely rapid cycling, a 10-round detachable box magazine, and exceptional ruggedness in adverse field conditions. The Canadian rifles were particularly well-regarded for their consistent accuracy, aided by the robust two-position aperture rear sight—later simplified in wartime to the stamped “L” flip sight to speed assembly. Chambered in the venerable .303 British cartridge, the rifle was effective for both combat and marksmanship training, with sufficient stopping power and a relatively mild recoil impulse. Long Branch continued to refine production methods throughout the war, turning out hundreds of thousands of rifles that saw service in Europe, the Pacific, and postwar conflicts. Today, the Enfield No. 4 Mk I* Long Branch rifles are prized by collectors not only for their historical importance but also for their craftsmanship and enduring shootability, standing as a testament to Canada’s wartime industrial capability and commitment to the Allied cause.
