Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Léon Nagant and his brother Émile were renowned Belgian firearms designers whose firm in Liège played a pivotal role in the development of the Russian Mosin–Nagant Model 1891 rifle, particularly contributing to its innovative magazine system. Léon’s own design, the M1895 revolver, was adopted as the standard sidearm for the Imperial Russian Army and police, replacing earlier models such as the Smith & Wesson Model 3. Initial production occurred in Belgium, but by 1898, Russia had acquired the manufacturing rights and began domestic production at the famed Tula Arsenal, with output eventually reaching around 20,000 revolvers per year. Two primary variants were produced before 1918: a double-action model for officers and a single-action version for enlisted personnel. Even after the Russian Revolution, the M1895 remained widely used, equipping both the Red Army and Soviet security forces.

Chambered for the proprietary 7.62x38mmR cartridge, the M1895 featured a distinctive gas-seal mechanism in which the cylinder moved forward when cocked, closing the gap between the cylinder and barrel. This innovation not only increased muzzle velocity but also allowed the revolver to be effectively suppressed—a rare feature for revolvers of the era. Manufactured at both Tula and the Izhevsk Arsenal, the M1895 became an enduring symbol of Russian and Soviet firearms craftsmanship. Its unique profile, reliability, and long service life cemented its iconic status, and finely finished presentation models were often awarded to officials and Party members in the 1930s as marks of distinction.
