The Ithaca Gun Company 1911A1 Military pistol represents one of the more historically significant contributions to the American sidearm legacy during World War II. With Colt unable to keep up with massive wartime demand, the U.S. government contracted multiple manufacturers to produce the M1911A1, including Ithaca, which was awarded its contract in 1942. Based in Ithaca, New York, the company shifted its operations to wartime production and by the end of the war had manufactured over 335,000 pistols, making them the second-largest producer of the 1911A1 behind Remington Rand. Like all government-issued 1911A1s, Ithaca’s pistols were chambered in .45 ACP, featured a five-inch barrel, and were built to the strict Ordnance Department specifications that ensured complete parts interchangeability across all contractors. They were marked with “ITHACA GUN CO., INC.” on the slide, and their parkerized finish, simplified small parts, and rugged design made them ideal for service use under combat conditions.
