Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Russian M44 Mosin-Nagant Carbine is a rugged, compact bolt-action rifle developed during the later years of World War II to provide Soviet troops with a shorter, more maneuverable alternative to the full-length M91/30 rifle. Chambered in the powerful 7.62x54R cartridge, the M44 delivers hard-hitting performance through its 20.5-inch barrel, making it especially suitable for mobile units such as cavalry and artillery crews. One of the M44’s most distinctive features is its permanently attached, side-folding cruciform-spike bayonet. This innovative design includes a groove inlet on the right side of the hardwood stock to accommodate the folded bayonet, enabling soldiers to quickly transition to close-quarters combat. While its specifications closely resemble those of the earlier M1938 carbine, the addition of this bayonet set the M44 apart. The rifle was built with a durable hardwood stock and a simple, robust action, reflecting Soviet military priorities of reliability and functionality in harsh conditions. Initial service-test production began in 1943 with approximately 50,000 units, and the M44 was officially introduced into service in late 1944. Production continued until 1948 at the Izhevsk arsenal, with a limited run at the Tula arsenal only in 1944.

From February 1944 onward, the M44 gradually replaced the standard infantry rifle in the Red Army. Although it saw limited combat use during World War II, it became a staple weapon throughout the Cold War, not only within the Soviet Union but also among its satellite nations. Many post-war M44 carbines were counterbored to extend barrel life and improve performance. Known for its thunderous recoil, dramatic muzzle flash, and rugged design, the M44 remains an iconic symbol of mid-20th-century Soviet military engineering and continues to hold a revered place among collectors and shooting enthusiasts.
