Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this HISTORIC bolt-action rifle today for a penny-start auction; this is the Winchester 70 Transition Model!
The Winchester Model 70 Transition was produced for a short and significant period between 1946 and 1948, making it a rare and highly sought-after example among collectors and enthusiasts of classic American firearms. These rifles can be specifically identified by their serial number range of approximately 60,000 to 100,000, marking them as products of the transitional era between pre-war and post-war manufacturing. This limited production run bridges early pre-64 craftsmanship with subtle design changes that preceded the major revisions of 1964, making Transition models especially desirable for their historical value and build quality.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
After World War II, Winchester resumed civilian sporting-rifle production using leftover pre-war tooling and components. The company’s craftsmen were slowly modernizing the production line while working through wartime stock, so rifles from 1946 through roughly 1948 often display a fascinating mix of early pre-war and later post-war features — hence the term “transition model.” These rifles still retain the beloved pre-war claw-type Mauser extractor, controlled-round feed, and flat-bottom receiver, but may incorporate newly machined bolts, altered safety levers, and simplified stock checkering. Walnut stocks became slightly heavier with thicker fore-ends, and the comb profile began to evolve toward the later “Monte Carlo” shape that would appear on 1950s rifles. The metal finish and hand-fitting quality remained high, reflecting Winchester’s skilled labor returning from war production. Collectors prize these transition Model 70s because they mark the bridge between two legendary eras of craftsmanship — the elegant, finely fitted pre-war rifles and the more standardized post-war production that would dominate through the 1950s. Each rifle is a snapshot of Winchester’s factory adapting to peacetime: materials shortages, new tooling, and updated manufacturing methods all produced subtle variations from gun to gun. Whether chambered in .270, .30-06, or rarer calibers like .300 H&H Magnum, the 1946–1948 Model 70s combine pre-war aesthetics with post-war practicality — making them some of the most distinctive and historically significant sporting rifles Winchester ever built.
