The designation “Pre-64” carries particular importance among collectors and enthusiasts, referring to rifles produced prior to Winchester’s major 1964 redesign of the Model 70. In an effort to reduce manufacturing costs, the updated design incorporated more stamped components and transitioned from the original controlled-round feed system to a push-feed action—changes that many viewed as a departure from the rifle’s established standard of quality. Consequently, Pre-64 examples are especially prized for their superior machining, traditional construction, and proven reliability, making them highly desirable among Winchester aficionados and firearm collectors alike.
