The Colt Challenger is a post–World War II .22 Long Rifle semi-automatic pistol fed from a single-stack detachable magazine, produced by Colt’s Manufacturing Company from 1950 to 1955 alongside the 2nd Series Colt Woodsman. Intended as a more affordable alternative to the Woodsman, it retained that pistol’s proven blowback design and excellent handling while omitting certain refinements—such as adjustable sights—to reduce cost. Approximately 77,000 were produced, offered with either a 4 1/2-inch or a 6-inch barrel, fixed sights, and a heel-type magazine release at the base of the grip. The design is clean and straightforward, with a slim slide, narrow grip frame, and minimal external controls. Reliable, accurate, and well-balanced, the Colt Challenger represents one of Colt’s finest mid-century rimfire pistols and remains a popular choice for collectors and recreational shooters alike.
