Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1904, Colt introduced its first medium-frame double-action target revolver—the Officer’s Model—built on the New Army & Navy frame and featuring a flat-top bridge, a 6" barrel, and fully adjustable front and rear target sights. It was chambered in .38 Long Colt and the newly adopted .38 Special, and was fitted with elegantly checkered walnut grips (initially without medallions). With a polished blue finish and fine American craftsmanship, it immediately became Colt’s premium target revolver. From 1904 until 1908, the “First Issue” was followed by the Second Issue (1908–1926), upgraded with the improved Army Special/Official Police lockwork. It expanded caliber offerings to include .32 Colt, introduced silver Colt medallions on checkered walnut grips (from around 1913), and added barrel lengths ranging from 4" to 7 1/2", though the 6" remained most common.

In 1927, Colt unveiled the Officer’s Model Target, or Third Issue, which lasted until 1949. This variant added a lightweight .22 LR configuration alongside the .32 Colt (until about 1940) and .38 Special, introduced heavier barrel options in larger calibers (e.g., heavy barrel in .38), and added fine checkering on the trigger and backstrap. These guns offered incredibly smooth, hand-tuned single-action triggers and were the dominant choice in target competition throughout the interwar years.
