Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In 1927, Colt rebranded its Army Special revolver to better reflect its primary users, renaming it the Official Police. This new designation underscored the revolver's role as the standard-issue firearm for numerous police departments, including the New York City Police and Boston Police, and federal agencies, such as the FBI and Treasury Department. The Official Police became a prominent choice for law enforcement, remaining a favored service weapon through the 1960s. Its robust design also made it popular among private security services, industrial plant guards, and civilian gun owners seeking a reliable, powerful revolver. Throughout its production run from 1927 to 1969, the Official Police was offered in various configurations. Finishes included blue and bright nickel, with barrel lengths available in 2", 4", 5", and 6". It was chambered in .22LR, .32-20, .38-200 British (.38 S&W), .38 Special, and .41 Long Colt. The revolver featured square or optional rounded butts, with heavy barrel versions typically in 6". Grip options initially included checkered walnut with silver Colt medallions, transitioning to "Coltwood" plastic grips with molded silver medallions from 1947 to 1954, and then returning to checkered walnut. The post-war Official Police, produced from 1947 to 1969, introduced enhancements such as a ramped and serrated front sight, a newly shaped hammer with grooves, and an updated cylinder retention system, and was available in .22LR and .38 Special.
