Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 43 was manufactured by Winchester Repeating Arms Company from May 1948 through December 1953, with approximately 62,617 rifles produced during that period, and it remained listed in company catalogs through 1957 to sell remaining inventory. Introduced as a moderately priced small-bore sporting rifle positioned below the flagship Winchester Model 70, the Model 43 later earned the informal collector nickname “the Poor Man’s Model 70.” While the nickname reflects its more affordable price point, the Model 43 was mechanically distinct from the Model 70. It utilized a bolt action with a single primary locking lug, with the bolt handle serving as an additional bearing surface for lock-up. The rifle fed from a detachable box magazine and featured a 24-inch round tapered barrel. It was chambered in .22 Hornet, .218 Bee, .25-20 Winchester, and .32-20 Winchester, with the Hornet and Bee accounting for the majority of production. A notable internal design revision known as the “A-Series,” identified by an “A” suffix in the serial number, changed the locking lug’s size and shape and affected parts interchangeability between pre-A and A-Series rifles.

Beginning in late 1950, Winchester began factory drilling and tapping receivers for scope mounts. The rifle was offered in two options: the Standard, with a plain walnut pistol-grip stock, and the Special (often referred to by collectors as the Deluxe), which featured select walnut with factory checkering and upgraded cosmetic details. Though simpler and less refined than the Model 70, the Model 43 developed a reputation for light weight, smooth handling, and particularly good accuracy, securing its place among respected post-war Winchester sporting rifles.
