gold cup national match trophy delta elite super 38 government combat commander el
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this HIGHLY-DESIRABLE lightweight and compact semi-automatic pistol for a penny-start auction; this is the Colt Pre-70 Series Commander!

This Pre-70 Series Commander model, identified by the serial prefix "LW," was manufactured in 1951 and is chambered for the .38 Super cartridge. The Pre-70 Series Commanders are notable for their craftsmanship and design, with the .38 Super variant offering enhanced performance and versatility. This example from 1965 reflects a significant period in the model’s history, showcasing the precision and quality associated with Colt firearms of that era.

Per the owner, this Colt firearm was passed down from his father, Gilbert, a decorated World War II First Lieutenant, former German POW, and recipient of two Purple Hearts. The owner recalls being told that Gilbert was potentially going to be called up for service during the Korean Conflict, possibly as a Military Police officer, although the call-up ultimately never occurred. The pistol was believed to have been acquired in preparation for that potential assignment. As remembered by the owner, the firearm was kept stored safely in the family's cedar closet, alongside an MP helmet, and was never used in active service. Other than possible use during MP training or familiarization, Gilbert never used firearms after WWII, making this Colt a well-preserved piece of personal and military history.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Lightweight Commander combines Colt's history with modern innovation. Starting in 1950, Colt made a Commander version of its 1911A1 pistol with a lightweight alloy frame and a 4 ¼” barrel, but it changed its name to Lightweight Commander in 1970 to distinguish it from the newly introduced all-steel Combat Commander. The shorter barrel and alloy frame make this pistol more suited to regular carry than the full-size Government model while using the same magazine and grip for familiarity.

Colt released the .38 Super Automatic cartridge in 1929 as a hotter and heavier load than the .38 Automatic Colt Pistol (ACP) that it was modeled after. The .38 Super is in a twin case to its parent and designed for Colt’s semi-automatic, magazine-fed pistol in a 1911 style. The ammo features a bullet of the same size and weight, a .356-inch lead projectile with a standard weight of 130 grain (gr), loaded into a semi-rimmed (and sometimes rimless), straight-walled case that measures .900 inches. When fit with the bullet, the round comes in with a total length of 1.280 inches. The Super ammunition is loaded with more powder, making it a significantly more powerful round than the .38 Auto. The original ACP round had the 130 gr cartridge traveling at a velocity of 1,050 feet per second (fps). Under the higher pressure and loaded with more powder, the .38 Super Auto pushes that same 130 gr projectile to a velocity of 1,280 fps. For a brief period of time, the .38 Automatic was the most powerful automatic pistol cartridge in the country. It was also one of the first munitions that used velocity instead of bullet size to get performance results (a common occurrence with modern ballistic technology, hence the popularity of the 9mm and .380 ACP).
