Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Officer’s Model Special was Colt’s small-/medium-frame target revolver offered as part of the broader Officer’s Model family. It was announced in the late 1940s (introduced in 1949) and was produced as a limited post-war target variant before being superseded by the Officer’s Model Match in the early 1950s. Chamberings and configuration: the Special was built for .22 LR and .38 Special (with some Model family members also appearing in .32-20 or other small calibers) and used a six-shot cylinder. It was designed as a precision/target piece rather than a service revolver, typically fitted with adjustable target sights (the Coltmaster rear on the Special) and offered with heavier, tapered barrels—6" being the most common—to maximize sight radius and accuracy. Early Officer’s Model variants used Colt’s “E” frame and shared many premium finishing and fitting traits of pre-war premium Colts (deep bluing, checkered walnut grips, careful timing/fit). Post-war changes to retention and barrel attachment appeared in later production, and the Special’s role as a short-run, target-focused offering explains why it’s less common than Colt’s mass-market revolvers.
