Item Description

Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this semi-automatic pistol for a penny-start auction; this is the Colt Woodsman 2nd Series Match Target!

The Colt Woodsman 2nd Series represents the classic mid-century refinement of Colt’s beloved .22 target pistol, produced with a focus on improved accuracy, ergonomics, and sighting options. Within the 2nd Series, Colt offered several factory variations—sporting and target barrels, Match Target and Target models with adjustable rear sights and tuned triggers, and scoped or bull-barrel editions—so buyers could choose configurations optimized for casual plinking, formal competition, or precision bench work while enjoying the Woodsman’s signature fixed-barrel accuracy and crisp single-action trigger.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Woodsman is one of the great American recreational pistols — a slim, single-action, blowback-operated .22 Long Rifle semi-automatic that married excellent ergonomics, mechanical refinement, and exceptional out-of-the-box accuracy for generations of target shooters, plinkers, and small-game hunters. Introduced in the early 20th century and refined over several production series, the Woodsman’s virtues are immediately apparent: a rigid, fixed barrel that yields rifle-like consistency, a crisp single-action trigger with a short, predictable break, and a low bore axis in a slender, well-balanced frame that points naturally and recoils almost imperceptibly with .22 LR loads. Fit and finish on Colts were generally excellent — blued or nickel slides, nicely checkered walnut grips, and a tapered profile that made the pistol comfortable in varied hand sizes — and the design was available in a variety of sighting and barrel options (target barrels, bull barrels, adjustable sights, and factory-scoped examples) that broadened its appeal from casual shooters to serious marksmen. Mechanically simple and reliable when fed good ammunition, the Woodsman is also easy to maintain: disassembly is straightforward, the fixed barrel simplifies headspace concerns, and the parts are durable. For collectors and shooters today, condition, matching serials, original sighting package and finish, and early production details (grip shape, slide markings, and magazine type) strongly affect desirability and value; shooters who use them regularly prize them for their inherent accuracy and delightful trigger feel rather than for defensive utility.

The 2nd Series Match Target is the Woodsman variant most closely associated with precision rimfire competition and dedicated target work — it represents Colt’s factory answer to shooters seeking a pistol that could consistently deliver tight groups in formal matches or bench sessions. Compared with standard sporting Woodsmen, the 2nd Series Match Target typically features a heavier, more rigid barrel or a true target contour, an adjustable rear sight with a fine windage and elevation capability, and often a longer sight radius for improved aiming precision; the trigger is frequently tuned or adjustable from the factory to give an exceptionally light, clean pull with minimal creep and a predictable reset tailored to match use. Stocks and grips on Match Targets are selected or shaped to favor a steady, repeatable hand position (sometimes with higher beavertails or taller backstraps), and many 2nd Series examples left the factory with refinements such as improved sights, magazine followers optimized for reliable feeding of target rounds, and subtle action polishing to reduce lock time and friction. In practical use these Match Targets reward careful ammunition choice and shooter technique — they will separate good loads from mediocre ones and they respond strongly to a light, precise trigger finger — and on the vintage market well-preserved 2nd Series Match Targets are especially prized by collectors and competitors for their historical pedigree and their capability to still shoot to very demanding standards with modern target ammunition.
