The Smith & Wesson .38 Military & Police (Postwar), commonly referred to by collectors as the “Pre-Model 10,” is a six-shot double/single-action revolver chambered in .38 Special and built on the square-butt K-frame in the five-screw configuration. It represents the postwar continuation of the long-running Military & Police line following the wartime Victory Model and was offered primarily with a blued finish, with nickel also available. Collector research indicates that the S-prefix serial series began during the late wartime transition period, with some sources noting assembly activity as early as December 27, 1944, around serial number SV769000, while more commonly cited references place regular S-prefix production beginning in September 1945 at approximately S811120 after the “V” prefix was discontinued. Near the end of the S-prefix range in early 1948, at serial number S990184, Smith & Wesson introduced an improved short-throw hammer action that later became standard when the revolver was redesignated the Smith & Wesson Model 10 in 1957. Many early postwar frames retain the hole in the side of the frame for access to the lanyard ring lock pin and typically bear the four-line address “Made in U.S.A., Marcas Registradas, Smith & Wesson, Springfield, Mass.” on the right side.

After production surpassed the second million Military & Police revolvers, the serial prefix changed again on March 22, 1948, to the C-prefix beginning at C1. This series was numbered concurrently with the M&P Airweight and the M&P .22, later known to collectors as the pre-Model 45. The C-prefix series continued until 1967, when the D-prefix was introduced after C999999. Barrel lengths included 2-, 4-, 5-, and 6-inch pinned round barrels fitted with a fixed round-blade front sight and square-notch rear sight, with the rear sight notch width later increased from approximately 1/10-inch to about 1/8-inch. Finishes were offered in blue or nickel, and the revolver featured a six-shot fluted cylinder, a case-colored serrated trigger, a finely checkered hammer with spur, checkered diamond walnut grips with S&W monograms, the Smith & Wesson trademark on the sideplate, and barrel markings reading “Smith & Wesson” on the left side and “.38 S&W Special CTG.” on the right.
The backstrap and forestrap were smooth, and serial numbers were applied to the butt, cylinder face, barrel flat, yoke face (visible through a charge hole), rear of the extractor star, and inside the right grip panel. A round-butt frame variation became available in late 1947, and the 2-inch variation typically carried the Smith & Wesson name and caliber marking on the left side of the barrel. The revolver weighed approximately 29.5 ounces in the 4-inch configuration and was produced in these postwar variations prior to the 1957 adoption of the Model 10 designation, after which it continued under that official name as one of Smith & Wesson’s longest-produced service revolvers.
