Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this well-known and desirable bolt-action rifle today for a penny start auction; this is the Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 SUPER GRADE!

The Winchester Model 70 Pre-64 is one of the most iconic and sought-after bolt-action rifles in American firearms history, often referred to as “The Rifleman’s Rifle.” Introduced in 1936, the Pre-64 Model 70 was designed as a premium sporting rifle built on the legacy of the earlier Model 54, featuring a controlled-round-feed (CRF) action derived from the legendary Mauser 98. Its robust claw extractor, solid bolt construction, hand-fitted parts, and high-quality machining set the standard for American bolt-action rifles. Hunters and collectors revere the Pre-64 models for their exceptional reliability, craftsmanship, and aesthetics, particularly those chambered in calibers like .30-06, .270 Win, and .375 H&H Magnum. In 1964, Winchester dramatically changed the design to reduce production costs, replacing many machined steel parts with cast or stamped components and eliminating the CRF system, which led to backlash from shooters and a steep decline in the rifle’s reputation. As a result, Pre-64 Model 70s have become highly collectible, symbolizing an era of fine American gunmaking before cost-cutting measures altered the landscape of production firearms.

This early fifties example is in high original condition, with the barrel being like new inside. This example features all the correct Super Grade components, such as a matching 1953 bolt, a low-combed SG stock with a pancake cheekpiece, the Super Grade stamped floorplate, a Redfield 255 gold bead front sight, a 6W two-leaf flip rear sight with correct ramp mount, and proper detachable swivels.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 70 Super Grade in .375 H&H Magnum stands as a prime example of mid-century American rifle craftsmanship at its finest. Manufactured in 1953, this early fifties example retains high original condition, with a barrel that remains like new internally. As part of Winchester’s prestigious Super Grade line, it embodies the elevated fit, finish, and attention to detail that collectors and hunters have long associated with the Pre-64 Model 70. Built on the controlled-round-feed (CRF) action derived from the Mauser 98, the rifle offers exceptional reliability and smooth cycling, qualities that made the Model 70 “The Rifleman’s Rifle.” The .375 H&H Magnum chambering underscores its purpose as a serious dangerous game rifle, offering the power and reach required for hunting large and dangerous species around the world.

This particular example features all the correct and desirable Super Grade components, including a matching 1953 bolt, a low-combed Super Grade stock with a classic pancake cheekpiece, the Super Grade-stamped floorplate, and deluxe wraparound checkering for enhanced grip and refined aesthetics. Its 25-inch barrel is fitted with a hooded Redfield 255 gold bead front sight and an adjustable 6W two-leaf flip rear sight on the correct ramp mount, ensuring versatility and precision in the field. Accented with a black pistol grip cap and matching forend tip, and equipped with proper detachable swivels, this rifle seamlessly combines function and artistry. Whether appreciated as a highly collectible Pre-64 Winchester or trusted as a capable and elegant hunting rifle, this Super Grade in .375 H&H Magnum represents the pinnacle of Winchester’s bolt-action legacy.
