Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
Manufactured by Colt in 1954, this Colt Cobra First Issue revolver exemplifies the company’s early postwar push into lightweight “space age” materials. Chambered in .38 Special with a 2-inch barrel, the Cobra was essentially a Detective Special fitted with an aluminum-alloy frame—marketed as “Coltalloy”—while retaining steel for the barrel and critical components. This innovation made the Cobra notably lighter and easier to carry than its all-steel counterparts, helping establish Colt’s tradition of naming revolvers after snakes and laying the groundwork for the later “Snake Gun” lineage. The First Issue Cobra (1950–1972) featured a longer grip frame and square-butt configuration, later shortened in 1966 to match the Agent model while preserving grip feel through overlapping stocks. Offered in several calibers and barrel lengths, standard finishes paired blued steel with blue-black anodized aluminum or bright nickel, with grip styles evolving from early molded plastics to checkered walnut. Later, Second Issue Cobras introduced a heavy barrel with a shrouded ejector rod and were the only versions rated for limited +P use, reflecting both the practical appeal and engineering limits of aluminum-framed revolvers. Overall, the Cobra stands as a milestone in Colt’s transition to lighter defensive revolvers and a key chapter in mid-20th-century handgun development.
Return Policy:
