Item Description
Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this classic bolt-action rifle today for a penny-start auction, this is the Winchester Model 70 Standard Grade.
The Winchester Model 70 chambered in .250-3000 Savage is considered one of the scarcer calibers of the Pre-64 era. Winchester introduced the .250-3000 Savage chambering in 1937 and discontinued it as a regular catalog offering in 1949. Although exact factory production totals by chambering were not officially published, collector research consistently indicates that only a very small percentage of the total Model 70 production from 1937 through 1949 was made in .250-3000 Savage. Some examples are known to have been assembled from remaining parts into the early 1950s, including rifles manufactured as late as 1954, making those later-dated examples especially unusual and desirable among collectors.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester Model 54, produced from 1925 until 1937, holds a significant place in the history of bolt-action sporting rifles as Winchester's first successful entry into the category. A sporterized version of the Mauser design, the Model 54 was an important step forward for the company, but lacked some of the refinements many bolt-action hunters were seeking at the time. Though respected for its strength and reliability, it was viewed by some shooters as somewhat plain in comparison to emerging competitors. When the Winchester Model 70 debuted in 1937, it set a new standard, offering a more robust action, better checkering, enhanced safety features, and a significantly enhanced trigger mechanism. The Model 70's design quickly made it the most widely recognized bolt-action rifle in the world, earning the nickname "The Rifleman's Rifle" due to its unparalleled reliability, refined craftsmanship, and consistent performance in the field.

The term “Pre-64” is significant because, in 1964, Winchester Repeating Arms Company redesigned the Winchester Model 70 to cut manufacturing costs, replacing many machined parts with stamped components and switching to a push-feed system, changes that were widely seen as a downgrade. These revisions marked a noticeable departure from the earlier production methods and materials that had defined the rifle’s original reputation. As a result, the Pre-64 models are highly regarded for their excellent quality, craftsmanship, and reliability, making them highly regarded by Winchester collectors and firearm enthusiasts alike.
