Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Single-Six is a classic single-action revolver introduced by Sturm, Ruger & Co. in June 1953 as an affordable and rugged .22 caliber rimfire revolver patterned after the Colt Single Action Army. It quickly developed a reputation for accuracy, durability, and craftsmanship. The model remains in production today as the New Model Single-Six, introduced in 1973 with Ruger’s transfer-bar safety system, which prevents the hammer from striking the firing pin unless the trigger is fully pulled—allowing the revolver to be safely carried with all six chambers loaded. Earlier “Old Model” Single-Six revolvers (1953–1972) lack this feature and should be carried with the hammer down on an empty chamber; Ruger continues to offer a free retrofit to install the transfer-bar mechanism.

Early Single-Six revolvers produced from 1953 through roughly 1957 featured a distinctive flat-latch loading gate, or “flat-gate,” a flat-profile, spring-loaded rectangular gate on the right rear of the frame that pivots open for loading and unloading. This design was replaced around serial number 65,000 by the contoured, rounded gate used thereafter. Collectors have informally divided the flat-gate revolvers into several “types” based on small production and marking differences—terms never used by Ruger but widely adopted within the collecting community. Type 1 revolvers feature a smooth front sight, a small-head ejector-rod button, and an early “Single Six” roll mark without a hyphen. Type 2 adds a serrated front sight and minor frame and marking changes. Type 3 continues the flat-gate design with refinements in roll mark style and ejector components; collectors sometimes refer to the very late flat-gate examples near the changeover as transitional Type 4 models. Although these distinctions are based on observation rather than factory documentation, they are well-established among Ruger historians, and the early flat-gate Single-Six revolvers remain highly sought-after by collectors today.
