Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this DESIRABLE single-action revolver for a penny-start auction; this is the Ruger Single-Six Flat Loading Gate!
This example is an unconverted Ruger Single-Six, retaining its original pre-1973 lockwork and classic half-cock loading system. It features the rare flat top frame, known for its clean, streamlined sight profile found only on the earliest models. The Single-Six Flat Loading Gate was produced exclusively with a 5 1/2" barrel, with approximately 62,000 examples manufactured between 1953 and 1957. Offered in four variations within the serial number range 1–62000, these early-production revolvers are highly sought after by both shooters and collectors.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Single-Six Flat Loading Gate with a flat top frame represents one of the most sought-after early production variants in the Single-Six lineup, both for its historical significance and its distinct mechanical characteristics. Produced in the mid-1950s, these revolvers were part of Ruger’s first-generation single-action .22 rimfire offerings, and they stand apart from later models in several key ways. Most notably, the “flat loading gate” design—lacking the contour and curvature of later versions—paired with a flat top frame devoid of the protective rear sight “ears” that became standard, creates a cleaner, more streamlined silhouette reminiscent of classic Colt single-actions. The unconverted status of such an example means it retains its original “pre-1973” lockwork without the transfer bar safety conversion, preserving the original half-cock loading procedure and the crisp, short hammer travel that traditionalists often prefer for its period-correct authenticity. From a collector’s perspective, these flat top, flat gate Single-Sixes occupy a special place because they represent the very earliest refinement of Bill Ruger’s single-action rimfire concept—combining the reliability of modern coil-spring internals with the styling cues and handling traits of Old West revolvers. The absence of conversion not only maintains mechanical originality but also preserves its value and historical integrity, as collectors frequently seek out first-generation examples in untouched condition. The flat top frame allows for fully adjustable rear sights without the later bulkier protective housing, offering a fine sight picture for target shooting while keeping the profile sleek. Combined with the durable steel construction, six-shot .22 LR cylinder, and Ruger’s then-new investment casting techniques, this early Single-Six variant was a durable and affordable alternative to more expensive Colt rimfires of the era. Today, unconverted flat loading gate flat tops are prized not just as shooters but as tangible links to Ruger’s formative years and the post-war revival of the American single-action revolver.
