Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 740 Woodsmaster is a classic semi-automatic rifle that reflects the craftsmanship and innovation of mid-20th-century American firearms design. Produced in 1957, this particular rifle is chambered in the less common .280 Remington, a caliber prized by hunters for its excellent ballistics and manageable recoil. It features a 22-inch blued barrel paired with a four-round detachable magazine, providing a solid combination of firepower and handling. The rifle’s semi-automatic action allows for quicker follow-up shots—an advantage for hunting game in dense cover or during fast-paced scenarios. The factory blade front sight sits on a serrated ramp, and this example is outfitted with a period-correct Leupold M7 4X scope, enhancing its accuracy and long-range utility. The barreled action is mounted in a smooth walnut stock with a traditional pistol grip, offering both durability and timeless visual appeal. This hardwood design was typical of the era and contributes to the rifle’s balanced feel and aesthetic charm. As a transitional model between the earlier manually operated designs and more modern semi-automatics, the Model 740 was eventually succeeded by the Remington 742 in 1960 and later the 7400 in 1980, but it remains a respected collectible today.
