Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Old Model Blackhawk (originally introduced in 1955) is a six-shot, single-action revolver built on a robust frame with adjustable sights and rugged, straightforward internals. Its initial chambering was the .357 Magnum, and over its production run, Ruger offered several distinctive calibers—among them .30 Carbine, .41 Magnum, .44 Magnum, and .45 Colt. In its original “three-screw” design, the Old Model Blackhawk required the hammer to be half-cocked for loading and unloading, similar to the classic Colt Single Action Army. This meant that, when fully loaded, the hammer rested directly on the sixth chamber—a condition that is considered a safety risk by modern standards. In 1973, Ruger introduced the New Model Blackhawk, which added a transfer-bar mechanism so that a round under the hammer could not fire unless the trigger was pulled.

Retrofit conversions were also made available for earlier Old Models. While the New Model later introduced convertible cylinders and additional chamberings, the Old Model remains particularly prized by collectors and shooters for its original calibers and classic design.
