Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson K-22 Masterpiece (Postwar, 3rd Model), often referred to as the "Pre-Model 17," is a double/single-action revolver chambered in .22 Long Rifle. Constructed on the square-butt K target frame with five screws, it features a six-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.6". This model closely resembles the 2nd Model K-22 Masterpiece; early production examples exhibit a narrow, serrated top rib with a slight taper along the barrel serrations, reducing 2–4 serrations along the rib, while later examples were produced with a full-width serrated rib without taper. The Postwar 3rd Model marks the beginning of the K serial prefix range, starting at K101. The K-22 Masterpiece was fitted with either a 1/10-inch or 1/8-inch plain patridge front sight and a micrometer-adjustable rear sight, allowing precise windage and elevation adjustments.

Its standard blue finish is complemented by checkered walnut grips featuring S&W medallions. The frame is enhanced with six-groove forestrap and backstrap checkering; the hammer is checkered and measures .375" in width, while the serrated trigger, measuring .265" wide, incorporates an adjustable stop. Serial numbers are located on the butt of the frame, cylinder face, yoke, behind the star extractor, and typically on the right-hand grip panel in a staggered pattern, with additional markings on the barrel flat. Barrel markings include "Smith & Wesson" on the left side and "22 Long Rifle CTG" on the right, accompanied by a prominent S&W trademark on the side plate.
Frames produced between 1946 and 1948 may display only "Made in U.S.A.," and some frames and barrels may lack markings entirely. Beginning in 1948, frames were stamped with the four-line company address on the right side, just forward and above the trigger guard. The K serial range extends from K101 to the end of the series, after which a three-letter serial prefix system was adopted. Many examples were manufactured with a drilled hole under the grips to accommodate an assembly fixture. The K-22 Masterpiece (Postwar, 3rd Model) was produced from 1946 to 1989.
