Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
After World War II, Colt was among the first firearms manufacturers to embrace "Space Age" materials like aluminum. The company's initial foray into this new technology came in 1949 with the introduction of the Colt Commander, a semi-automatic pistol featuring an aluminum frame. Following that, Colt released an aluminum-framed version of the Detective Special, which they named the Colt Cobra. This marked the beginning of Colt's iconic series of "Snake" guns, which would become a staple in their lineup. The Colt Cobra was essentially a Detective Special with a few key changes: it featured an aluminum frame, side plate, and cylinder crane, while the barrel and other critical components were made of steel. The gun was produced from 1950 to 1981 and was offered in barrel lengths of 2, 3, and 4 inches, with some rare 5-inch square-butt models made specifically for the Venezuelan government. The Cobra was chambered in a variety of calibers, including .38 Special, .32 New Police (.32 S&W), .38 New Police (.38 S&W), and .22LR. Its finish options included bright blued steel with blue-black anodized aluminum parts, or full bright nickel.

During the Colt strike in the 1980s, the Cobra was produced with a dull, unpolished black finish and smooth wood grips. The early 4-inch models featured a square butt, which was later changed to the rounded butt seen on the 2-inch version. The grips also evolved over time, starting with "Coltwood" plastic grips with molded silver Colt medallions, transitioning to plain plastic grips, then to checkered walnut grips with silver medallions, and finally to Combat-style grips without medallions. Like other "D-frame" Colt revolvers, the Cobra was available with a special-order hammer shroud. The First Issue Cobra, produced from 1950 to 1972, initially featured a square butt, but this was later changed to a round butt in the mid-1960s. In 1966, Colt simplified production by updating the grip frame to the same short frame used in the Colt Agent. This change resulted in the wood grips overlapping at the bottom of the frame, creating a full-size grip. The Colt Cobra remains a notable part of Colt's legacy, thanks to its distinctive design, lightweight aluminum frame, and its connection to the revered "Snake" series.
