According to the owner, this revolver was originally purchased in the 1980s and has remained in excellent condition ever since. He reports that he has never fired it during his ownership, and that the previous owner had only put a few rounds through it prior to that. The revolver shows only very minimal signs of use, including a very thin turn line on the cylinder and extremely light bluing wear, consistent with careful handling and storage over the decades. It also includes the original box insert and additional .22 LR cylinder, further enhancing its appeal to collectors seeking a well-preserved example.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 53, also known as the .22 Centerfire Magnum or “The Jet,” is one of the most distinctive revolvers ever produced by the company. Introduced in the early 1960s, the Model 53 was chambered for the experimental .22 Remington Jet cartridge—a bottlenecked centerfire round designed to achieve high velocities for small game hunting and varmint control. Built on the K-frame, the revolver typically featured a six-inch barrel, adjustable sights, and a robust six-shot cylinder. One of its most innovative features was its dual firing pin system and accompanying chamber inserts, allowing it to fire both .22 Jet cartridges and standard .22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle rimfire rounds, greatly increasing its versatility. The high-velocity Jet round could exceed 2,000 feet per second from the longer barrel, delivering impressive performance in a revolver platform.

Despite its forward-thinking design, the Model 53 faced some practical challenges. The .22 Jet cartridge often experienced case setback under recoil, which could cause the cylinder to bind and affect reliability—particularly when fired without properly lubricated chambers. However, for many enthusiasts and collectors, these quirks are overshadowed by the revolver’s engineering uniqueness and its place in firearms innovation. The Model 53 is also notable for its appearance and build quality, featuring finely blued steel and classic Smith & Wesson aesthetics. Today, it holds a special place among revolver collectors and those intrigued by unconventional calibers. Its combination of ambitious design, dual-caliber capability, and limited production run makes the Model 53 both a conversation piece and a prized addition to any serious Smith & Wesson collection.
