Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this ULTRA SCARCE swiveling breechblock, single-shot pistol for a penny-start auction; this is the Ruger Hawkeye!

The Ruger Hawkeye is a rare and innovative single-shot pistol introduced by Sturm, Ruger & Co. in 1963. Built on the familiar frame of the Ruger Blackhawk revolver, the Hawkeye replaced the traditional rotating cylinder with a unique swiveling breechblock that allowed direct loading of a single round into the barrel. Chambered in .256 Winchester Magnum—a high-velocity cartridge originally designed for varmint hunting—the Hawkeye was intended to deliver rifle-like accuracy in a compact handgun platform. Only about 3,075 units were produced before the model was discontinued in 1964, making it a sought-after collectible today. Though commercially unsuccessful in its time, the Hawkeye stands as a testament to Ruger’s willingness to push design boundaries and experiment with unconventional firearm concepts.

The owner states that this example remains New Old Stock, and we see no evidence to indicate otherwise.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Hawkeye is a distinctive single-shot pistol introduced by Sturm, Ruger & Co. in 1963, designed to offer precision shooting capabilities in a compact form. Built on the frame of the Ruger Blackhawk revolver, the Hawkeye replaced the traditional rotating cylinder with a unique swiveling breechblock system. This mechanism allowed shooters to manually load a single round directly into the barrel, eliminating the barrel-cylinder gap typical of revolvers and enhancing accuracy. Chambered in the .256 Winchester Magnum—a high-velocity, flat-shooting cartridge developed by Winchester in 1960—the Hawkeye was marketed toward varmint hunters and handgun enthusiasts seeking long-range performance.

Despite its innovative design and potential for accuracy, the Ruger Hawkeye did not achieve commercial success. Only approximately 3,075 units were produced between 1963 and 1964, and the model was discontinued due to limited demand. Factors contributing to its lack of popularity included the niche appeal of the .256 Winchester Magnum cartridge, which had limited firearm offerings and did not gain widespread adoption among shooters. Additionally, the Hawkeye's advanced capabilities were somewhat ahead of their time, particularly in terms of accuracy at long ranges, which could have benefited significantly from high-quality optical sights—technology that was not readily available in 1962. Today, the Ruger Hawkeye remains a rare and collectible firearm, remembered for its pioneering design and as a testament to Ruger’s innovative spirit.
