Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this STUNNING semi-automatic rifle today for a penny-start auction; this is the Browning SA-22 Grade III!
A. Maréchal was a highly regarded Belgian firearms engraver associated with the golden age of Liège gunmaking, a period when Belgium stood at the center of fine sporting arms production for Europe and the American market. Trained within the traditional Liège apprenticeship system, Maréchal learned his craft under established master engravers working for major firms supplying Fabrique Nationale (FN) and Browning Arms Company, where engraving skill was developed through years of hand work on production and presentation-grade firearms. Like many elite Belgian engravers of the era, he progressed from basic scroll and border work to increasingly complex patterns, eventually earning the opportunity to engrave higher-grade sporting arms destined for export, particularly to the United States.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Belgian Browning SA-22 Grade III represents one of the most refined expressions of John M. Browning’s iconic semi-automatic rimfire design, combining mechanical ingenuity with the elevated artistry of Belgian craftsmanship. Manufactured by Fabrique Nationale (FN) in Liège, Belgium, the SA-22 is best known for its unique takedown system and bottom-ejecting action, features that make it both compact for transport and exceptionally friendly to left-handed shooters. In the Grade III configuration, the rifle was elevated well beyond standard production models through extensive hand engraving, typically featuring deep, flowing scrollwork and tasteful game-scene motifs applied by skilled Belgian engravers. These rifles were produced in comparatively limited numbers and were intended for sportsmen who valued both performance and presentation. Mechanically, the Belgian SA-22 is renowned for its smooth, reliable operation and excellent accuracy, attributes that helped establish it as one of the finest rimfire sporting rifles of the 20th century. The high-gloss blued finish, select walnut stock with fine checkering, and engraved receiver give the Grade III a level of fit and finish rarely seen on modern rimfire rifles. As production later shifted away from Belgium, earlier Belgian-made examples—especially higher grades like the Grade III—became increasingly desirable. Today, the Belgium Browning SA-22 Grade III is highly regarded by collectors and enthusiasts as a benchmark of classic rimfire design, prized for its artistry, limited availability, and enduring connection to Browning’s golden era of European production.
