The Battle of Belleau Wood began on June 1, 1918, leading to fierce clashes over wheat fields, forests, and trenches. Despite a German attempt to split the Allied forces with a significant assault on July 15, the tide turned against them, culminating in a counteroffensive by French and American troops on July 18, 1918, during the Battle of Chateau-Thierry.
