Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Single Action Frontier Scout was introduced by Colt in 1957 as a scaled-down, .22-caliber tribute to the legendary Colt Single Action Army revolver, offering shooters the familiar lines and handling of the Old West’s iconic six-shooter in a more economical and lightweight package. Built primarily on an alloy frame to keep weight down, the Frontier Scout featured a six-shot cylinder, fixed sights, and a variety of barrel lengths—most commonly 4.75 and 5.5 inches—mirroring the classic proportions of its larger predecessor. The revolver was marketed toward younger shooters, plinkers, and enthusiasts seeking an affordable way to enjoy the cowboy-action aesthetic without the expense or recoil of full-powered centerfire cartridges. Over its production run, which lasted into the early 1970s, Colt offered the Frontier Scout in several cosmetic variations, including blued, nickel, and later color case-hardened finishes, often with distinctive grips bearing medallions or commemorative motifs that made them popular as presentation or collectible pieces. Beyond its recreational appeal, the Frontier Scout holds an important place in Colt’s mid-20th-century history as part of the company’s effort to capitalize on the surging Western craze of the postwar era. Television and movies featuring cowboys and lawmen drove renewed interest in single-action revolvers, and the Frontier Scout allowed Colt to capture a new generation of enthusiasts while maintaining its reputation for quality workmanship. While it lacks the heft and power of the original Single Action Army, the Scout’s smooth action, reliable mechanism, and nostalgic styling gave it enduring charm, and it served as a gateway revolver for countless shooters who later graduated to larger-caliber Colt wheelguns. Today, surviving examples—especially early models, commemorative editions, and those retaining their original boxes and paperwork—are sought after by collectors, appreciated both as functional rimfire revolvers and as tangible links to Colt’s storied frontier legacy.
