Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 581, introduced in 1967, is a bolt-action rifle chambered for .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle, offering versatility for target shooters, plinkers, and small-game hunters alike. Early production models featured a smaller, oval-shaped ejection port, which is considered very collectible by collectors for its original design and classic aesthetic. In the early 1970s, Remington updated the design with a larger, rectangular ejection port, which improved cartridge ejection, reliability, and allowed smoother cycling, especially during extended shooting sessions. Following the discontinuation of the original 581 in 1983, Remington introduced the 581 Sportsman in 1986, which continued production until 1999. The Sportsman retained the bolt-action design and .22 caliber versatility while incorporating refinements aimed at modern shooters.

Both the original 581 and the 581 Sportsman are celebrated for their craftsmanship, walnut stocks, blue steel finishes, and smooth triggers, which contributed to their accuracy and reliability. Collectors particularly value the early small-ejector-port 581s for their rarity and historical significance, with later large-ejector-port models and the Sportsman series being appreciated for their enhanced functionality and wider availability. Today, the Model 581 and 581 Sportsman stand as enduring examples of Remington’s dedication to precision, durability, and quality in American .22 rifles.
