Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Remington Model 660, produced from 1968 to 1971, was introduced as an improved successor to the Model 600, addressing many criticisms of the earlier rifle while maintaining its reputation as a compact, quick-handling hunting carbine. The most noticeable changes included the removal of the plastic ventilated rib and an increase in barrel length to 20 inches, improving balance and modestly enhancing muzzle performance. Built on Remington’s “three rings of steel” short-action bolt design, the 660 retained much of the smooth operation and accuracy of its predecessor, though a few refinements were made in parts and tolerances to improve durability and handling. Typical unloaded weight for standard models is about 6 1/2 pounds, roughly a pound heavier than many Model 600s (which were often quoted around 5 1/2 lb). The Model 660 Magnum variant featured a laminated wood stock, recoil pad, and sling swivels. Its factory chamberings included .222 Remington, .243 Winchester, .308 Winchester, 6mm Remington, 6.5 Remington Magnum, and .350 Remington Magnum, with .223 Remington being extremely rare (only ~227 built).

Remington manufactured approximately 45,332 standard 660s and 5,204 Magnum 660s, for a total of 50,536 rifles before stopping production in 1971. Soon afterward, Remington introduced the Model 600 Mohawk (often treated as a simplified version of the 600/660 line), which returned to an 18 1/2-inch barrel and omitted the ventilated rib. Today, the Model 660 is widely appreciated among collectors as one of Remington’s more distinctive compact bolt-action rifles—valued for its blend of portability, power, and its relatively early use of magnum cartridges in a short-action carbine format.
