Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 10 is a double-/single-action revolver chambered in .38 Special, built on the K-frame (round or square butt) as a continuation of the postwar .38 Military & Police Victory Model. Early postwar examples retained the forged round-blade front sight and square-notch rear sight from wartime models, which were later replaced by a 1/10" serrated ramp and then a 1/8" serrated ramp. Originally offered with pinned barrels in 2", 4", 5", or 6" lengths, 3" barrels were available by special order and later became regularly cataloged. Meanwhile, 2 1/2" versions were produced for special contracts. Available in blue or nickel finishes, the Model 10 features a six-shot fluted cylinder (1.56" nominal length). Square-butt grips are checked walnut Magna style with S&W medallions. The frame marking “Made in USA” was later joined by additional text, creating the “four-line” marking, and a large S&W trademark appears on the side plate.

Barrel rollmarks read “Smith & Wesson” on the left and “.38 S&W Special CTG” on the right, though some 2" or commemorative models bear only the left-side marking. The original five-screw K-frame design was later simplified to a four-screw configuration by removing the upper sideplate screw, and eventually to a three-screw configuration by eliminating the trigger-guard screw. Early production used a .265" checked hammer and serrated trigger; later versions adopted a .312" smooth combat trigger and .265" service hammer. The gas ring position alternated between cylinder and yoke during production. Frames varied slightly between heavy- and tapered-barrel models, and the Model 10 shared serial numbering with related Models 11, 12, 45, and the Aircrewman.

Late-production examples feature a 10-groove serrated round-butt frame with synthetic grips and a MIM (metal injection molded) thumbpiece. The Model 10-11 revision introduced a redesigned frame with a machined cylinder stop lug, MIM hammer and trigger, and a floating firing pin. Typical weights are 26 oz (2"), 30.5 oz (4" standard), and 34 oz (4" heavy). In 2002, S&W added an internal key-lock mechanism. Produced from circa 1946 to the present, the Model 10 remains one of Smith & Wesson’s most iconic and enduring revolvers.
