Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Walther OSP is a purpose-built precision pistol designed for the 25m Rapid Fire event, originally chambered for .22 Short ammunition. Developed and refined from the mid-1960s (with later evolutions such as the OSP 2000), it became the dominant rapid-fire handgun at the international level. The design emphasized extreme controllability, featuring a low-bore-axis ergonomic (Morini-style) grip, a ported/weighted barrel that nearly eliminated recoil, and very light trigger options (commonly quoted in the 100–200g range) to enable fast consecutive shots. Later OSP variants used modular components that allowed relatively quick caliber/parts changes. Mid-2000s ISSF rule changes (around 2004–2005) — which effectively prohibited .22 Short for that event and restricted wrap-around/ergonomic grips and ultra-light trigger pulls — removed the OSP’s competitive advantage for rapid-fire, and Walther’s SSP was developed as the rule-compliant successor. The OSP’s influence on rapid-fire pistol design remains significant.
