Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 28, also known as the Highway Patrolman, is a .357 Magnum/.38 Special double-action/single-action revolver introduced in April 1954. Built on the square-butt N-frame with five screws, it was designed as a utilitarian version of the Model 27, featuring a durable satin blue finish. Notably, it is the only N-frame revolver with a non-serrated, adjustable rear sight leaf and a barrel rib without serrations, a feature it shares with the Model 56. The revolver has a six-shot, fluted, counterbored cylinder with a nominal length of 1.62" and is offered with either a 4" or 6" pinned and ribbed barrel. Grip options include Magna-style or target walnut grips with S&W medallions and diamond inserts. Early models featured a six-groove serrated backstrap and forestrap, later updated to a ten-groove pattern for improved handling. Additional distinguishing features include “Highway Patrol” stamped on the barrel, a 1/8" Baughman Quick Draw front sight, an adjustable micrometer click rear sight, a shrouded extractor rod, a .400" semi-target hammer, and either a .265" serrated or .400" smooth trigger.

The original test-production revolvers were marked “PATROLMAN”, and the name change to Highway Patrolman was suggested by Mrs. Florence Van Orden of The Evaluators Ltd. to then-president Carl Hellstrom. Approximately 8,427 units were manufactured in the first year, and production continued from 1954 to 1986, cementing the Model 28’s reputation as a rugged, reliable duty revolver for law enforcement and professional use.
