Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt New Frontier Second Generation represents Colt’s effort to blend the classic Single Action Army platform with modern target-shooting refinements, resulting in one of the most distinctive post-war single-action revolvers. Introduced in 1961 and produced through 1975, the New Frontier is easily identified by its flat-top frame, adjustable rear sight, and the “NF” suffix in the serial number, features that set it apart from traditional fixed-sight SAAs. Chambered in desirable calibers such as .357 Magnum, .44 Special, and .45 Colt—with .38 Special being particularly rare—the New Frontier was offered in several barrel lengths, including scarce 4¾" and 5½" configurations, with the 7½" barrel being the most commonly encountered. Standard finish consisted of a case-hardened frame with a blued barrel and cylinder, paired with smooth walnut grips.

From a collector’s perspective, the Second Generation New Frontier occupies a highly respected niche within the Colt Single Action lineage. With total production estimated at approximately 4,200 revolvers, these guns were produced in far smaller numbers than standard Second Generation SAAs, contributing to their desirability today. The adjustable-sight configuration makes the New Frontier one of the most shootable single-action Colts ever produced, while still retaining the fit, finish, and traditional craftsmanship associated with Colt’s Hartford era. As a result, the New Frontier is widely regarded as both a practical shooter and a serious collector’s revolver, prized for its rarity, caliber options, and its role as a refined evolution of the classic Single Action Army.
