Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 61 Escort was a small, semi-automatic .22 Long Rifle pistol designed for concealed carry and personal defense, produced between 1970 and 1973. It was a compact, 5-shot firearm with a 2-1/8" barrel and was offered in either a blue or nickel finish. The Model 61 featured a simple blowback operation, a fixed ramp front sight, and a square notch rear sight, making it relatively easy to aim at close distances, which is ideal for its intended defensive role. A manual safety was included for safe handling, and each pistol came with a zippered gun rug for easy carrying and storage. Its compact size and light weight made it a popular option for those seeking a small, reliable handgun for everyday carry, but its reputation was marred by early mechanical issues.

Despite its promising design, the Model 61 Escort faced significant reliability problems, especially in its early production runs. Rather than fixing the issues, Smith & Wesson reportedly took returned pistols, replaced their serial numbers, and returned them to customers as "new" units. This led to a number of dissatisfied customers and ultimately contributed to the model's discontinuation after just four years of production. With only 64,938 units produced — of which approximately 6,600 were nickel-plated — the Model 61 was a short-lived but noteworthy entry in the market. Special presentation groups, with serial numbers ranging from B1-B500 and B500-B1000, were produced during its run, but the Escort never gained the lasting popularity of other Smith & Wesson pistols. Today, it remains a relatively rare and historically significant model in the company's lineup.
