Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 17 is a double-/single-action revolver chambered in .22 Long Rifle, built on the square-butt K target frame (five-screw). Originally produced as the K-22 Masterpiece, the postwar Model 17 features a hammer block safety, a six-shot fluted cylinder with a nominal length of 1.62", a blued finish (nickel examples are rare), and originally shipped with a pinned, ribbed 6" barrel (5" barrels are uncommon). Typical appointments include Walnut Magna-style grips with S&W medallions and a diamond escutcheon around the grip screw, a 1/10" or 1/8" Patridge front sight paired with an adjustable micrometer-click rear sight, a counterbored cylinder, and choice of .375" semi-target or .500" target hammer. Trigger options include a .312" smooth combat or .400"/.500" serrated target trigger with an optional adjustable stop. Early postwar frames have six grooves on the backstrap and forestrap; later production moved to a 10-groove serrated pattern. Produced circa 1946–1989, the Model 17 remains a very popular S&W target revolver.
