Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The FN Browning 10/71, produced between 1971 and 1974, stands as a unique response to American gun control laws, particularly the Gun Control Act of 1968, which imposed specific regulations on imported firearms, including minimum length and height requirements. In response, FN redesigned the classic Browning Model 1910 and Model 1955 to create the 10/71. With a 4.46-inch barrel, a longer slide, and the addition of adjustable target sights, this version became more suited for target shooting while retaining the core features and design elements that Browning was known for. The Model 10/71 was marketed as a versatile, multi-use firearm, capable of serving as both a recreational target pistol and a practical outdoor companion, with a claim that it would appeal to a wide variety of shooters, including women, due to its manageable size and weight. The combination of features like the extended magazine base, large target-style grips, and a generous 6-inch sight radius made the 10/71 an appealing option for those looking for both precision and versatility.

Despite its promising features, the Browning 10/71 had a short production run, with only a few years of availability, making it a rare and collectible piece in today’s market. FN’s decision to make the pistol fit the U.S. import requirements meant that they needed to find a balance between complying with legal restrictions and preserving the quality and performance Browning’s designs were known for. The 10/71 succeeded in offering a pistol that was reliable, functional, and innovative, but its short lifespan on the market kept it from becoming a widespread favorite. Today, it remains a sought-after piece by collectors due to its historical significance and its place in the evolution of Browning’s firearm designs, blending classic Belgian craftsmanship with a unique twist to meet American market needs.
