Designed as a rugged, reliable sidearm for the U.S. Army, it quickly became popular with lawmen, settlers, and outlaws alike, and remains closely associated with frontier-era culture. Chambered in powerful cartridges such as .45 Colt, .44-40, and later many others, the SAA features a solid-frame, single-action-only mechanism, fixed sights, and a distinctive loading gate system. Its balance, durability, and straightforward operation established it as a benchmark for revolver design, influencing countless later firearms and ensuring its enduring appeal among collectors, shooters, and historians.
 
The Colt Single Action Army is commonly divided into three major production generations, each with distinct characteristics. First-generation revolvers (1873–1941) are the most historically significant and collectible, featuring classic black-powder and early smokeless-era designs, with variations including black-powder and later smokeless frames.
