Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Browning Superposed stands as one of the most iconic over/under shotguns of the 20th century, representing John Moses Browning’s final design and a culmination of his lifetime of firearm innovation. Introduced in 1931 and produced in Belgium at FN Herstal, the Superposed offered sportsmen a finely crafted, durable, and elegantly balanced double gun during a time when over/unders were far less common than side-by-sides. Browning’s design featured a robust boxlock action with a full-width hinge pin, under-bolt locking system, and selective single trigger, all of which contributed to its reliable operation and excellent handling characteristics. The shotgun was available in multiple gauges over the decades—most notably 12, 20, 28, and .410—and in various grades, from the more utilitarian Standard Grade to elaborately engraved and exhibition-level models. These features helped cement the Superposed as a premier sporting arm for upland hunting, clay targets, and field use across generations.

Beyond its engineering merit, the Superposed occupies an important cultural and historical role in Browning and FN’s legacy. Early production values emphasized hand-fitting, skilled engraving, and walnut stocks with characteristic Belgian styling, qualities that made the shotgun both functional and collectible. After production ceased in 1977 for standard models—due mainly to rising labor costs—Browning transitioned to the Citori line made in Japan, while the Superposed remained available only through the Browning Custom Shop in highly limited, high-grade forms. Today, the Superposed retains a dedicated following among collectors and shooters who appreciate its combination of craftsmanship, mechanical integrity, and classic European aesthetics. Its enduring reputation stems not only from Browning’s engineering brilliance but also from the shotgun’s long-standing presence in the field and on the range, making it one of the most celebrated over/unders in sporting history.
