Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Browning Superposed Grade I Skeet Lightning represents one of the most refined variations of John M. Browning’s final and most celebrated design. Introduced as part of the broader Superposed line—first produced in 1931—the Skeet Lightning configuration gained popularity in the post-war decades for its specialized handling characteristics tailored to skeet shooters. Built in Belgium by FN, these shotguns maintained the Superposed tradition of hand-fitted craftsmanship, durable machined-steel receivers, and elegantly profiled barrels. The Grade I trim offered clean, understated engraving and high-quality walnut without excessive ornamentation, emphasizing performance more than decoration. Production of various Skeet Lightning configurations continued into the 1970s and 1980s, with some limited reintroductions appearing through the later years of Superposed manufacture.

What sets the Skeet Lightning variant apart is its fast, instinctive handling and competition-oriented ergonomics. The model is typically distinguished by its rounded or “Lightning-style” pistol grip and slimmer forearm, which together give the shotgun a lively, quick-mounting feel ideal for the rapid target transitions of skeet shooting. Paired with Browning’s highly regarded single-selective trigger, vented rib barrels, and fixed skeet chokes, the Superposed Skeet Lightning became a favorite among shooters seeking a dependable, smooth-swinging over/under. Today, these guns appeal strongly to collectors and sporting enthusiasts alike, not only for their performance pedigree but also for their place in the lineage of one of the 20th century’s most iconic sporting shotguns.
