Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Smith & Wesson Model 18 is a double-action revolver chambered in the popular .22 Long Rifle rimfire cartridge. It is built on the square-butt K-frame with a 5-screw design, featuring a 4" narrow ribbed, pinned barrel with a blue finish. The revolver is equipped with a combat-style 1/8" Baughman Quick Draw front sight mounted on a plain ramp base, paired with a micrometer-click adjustable rear sight. The 6-shot fluted, counterbored cylinder has a nominal length of 1.62", and the revolver features a short action. The walnut Magna-style grips display the S&W medallions. Typically, the Model 18 is found with a flat-faced .500" wide target hammer and a .400" wide target trigger or a .265" serrated trigger with a narrow checked hammer, and sometimes includes an optional adjustable trigger stop. The K-prefix serial number identifies this model, with early postwar examples featuring a six-groove backstrap and forestrap, while later production models have a 10-groove serrated backstrap and forestrap.
A rare variation made in the early 1970s in stainless steel was stamped as the Model 65, with approximately 17 units produced; reports indicate that only one survives today after most were destroyed in 1978. The Model 18 was produced from circa 1949 to 1985, reintroduced in 2009 as part of the Classic series, and was discontinued in 2011.
