Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Ruger Standard Model, introduced in 1949, was the first firearm produced by Sturm, Ruger & Company, and it marked the beginning of one of the most successful American gun manufacturers of the 20th century. Chambered in .22 Long Rifle, the pistol was designed by William B. Ruger with affordability, mechanical simplicity, and accuracy in mind. Featuring different barrel lengths, fixed sights (a Patridge-style front and square-notch rear), and a sleek blue finish, the Standard Model combined aesthetic appeal with practical function. Its grip panels were made of checkered black plastic, with early examples featuring a distinctive red eagle medallion on the left side—an emblem that became known as the “Red Eagle” and was used only until 1951, when co-founder Alexander Sturm passed away.

Out of respect, Ruger changed the medallion to black, creating a subtle but collectible distinction. Mechanically, the Standard Model broke from conventional handgun designs by forgoing a traditional reciprocating slide. Instead, it employed a cylindrical bolt housed inside a tubular receiver, operated via protruding “ears” at the rear—an approach inspired by the Japanese Nambu pistol, which Ruger studied extensively. The blowback-operated action was simple and robust, making the pistol both easy to manufacture and reliable in operation. It fed from a 9-round detachable magazine, and the manual safety could only be engaged when the pistol was cocked—a feature that also doubled as a bolt hold-open when rotated upward with the bolt retracted.
Affordable, accurate, and durable, the Ruger Standard Model quickly gained popularity among target shooters, plinkers, and small game hunters. Its innovative design and commercial success laid the groundwork for a whole family of Ruger rimfire pistols, including the Mark I, Mark II, Mark III, and modern Mark IV series, securing its place as a landmark firearm in American shooting history.
