Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
In the late 1960s, Beretta sought to diversify its product line by introducing its first double-action pistol, the Model 90, through its Roman affiliate. This marked an attempt to compete with established German double-action pistols while deviating from traditional firearm designs. Despite the Model 90's technical proficiency, it struggled in the market mainly due to its resemblance to the Walther PP, leading to disappointment among consumers and Beretta enthusiasts who felt betrayed by the perceived imitation. The pistol was designed with a simpler and more efficient firing mechanism compared to its German counterparts, featuring a barrel that was easily removable yet solidly attached to the frame, enhancing user-friendliness. However, its exclusive use of the 7.65 caliber was a significant drawback for the American market, where it was considered insufficient for defensive purposes; this limitation was not an issue in Italy or Europe, where 7.65 was more acceptable, but it hindered the model's wider acceptance. Production of the Model 90 began in 1970 and continued sporadically alongside the more favored Model 70; despite some modifications, including an improved hold-open device, the Model 90 formally ceased production in 1982. Ultimately, while the Model 90 was an excellent firearm in terms of performance and design, its failure to resonate with the market highlighted the challenges Beretta faced in redefining its brand amid evolving consumer expectations, and the lessons learned from its introduction contributed to more successful pistol designs in the future.
