Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt MK IV/Series 70 Government Model is one of the most respected commercial versions of the classic 1911 pistol produced by Colt's Manufacturing Company. Introduced in 1970, the Series 70 Government Model represented Colt’s effort to improve the accuracy and refinement of the traditional Colt M1911 design while preserving the original operating principles developed by John Moses Browning. Chambered in .45 ACP and featuring the traditional five-inch barrel and full-size steel frame of the Government Model configuration, the pistol retained the single-action trigger and short-recoil, locked-breech system that had made the 1911 platform famous for reliability and shootability. One of the most notable features of the Series 70 design was the introduction of the collet-style barrel bushing, a four-fingered spring steel component intended to center the barrel more precisely in the slide and thereby enhance mechanical accuracy without requiring a tightly fitted match barrel. The pistol typically included fixed combat sights, a spur hammer, a short trigger, and checkered wooden grip panels bearing the Colt medallion, maintaining the classic appearance associated with earlier Government Models.

Like earlier 1911 pistols, it also featured a manual thumb safety, a grip safety, and a single-stack detachable magazine that usually held seven rounds of .45 ACP. The Series 70 models were widely appreciated by shooters for their smooth triggers and traditional design, and they quickly became favorites among competitive shooters, law-enforcement officers, and civilian enthusiasts during the 1970s. Production of the original Series 70 line eventually ended in the early 1980s when Colt introduced the Series 80 firing-pin safety system, but the Series 70 Government Model remained so popular among collectors and 1911 purists that Colt later reintroduced modern reproductions of the design. Today, the Colt MK IV/Series 70 Government Model is widely regarded as one of the most desirable classic commercial 1911 pistols, valued for its historical significance, elegant simplicity, and faithful representation of the traditional Government Model configuration.
