Bryant Ridge Co. is pleased to present this LIMITED EDITION bolt-action rifle for a penny-start auction; this is the Winchester Model 70 - 1976 Palma Trophy Match Rifle!
The Winchester Model 70 Palma Trophy Match rifles built for the 1976 competition are among the rarest and most specialized target rifles ever produced by Winchester. With only approximately 140 rifles manufactured exclusively by the Winchester Custom Shop for use in that year's prestigious Palma Trophy Match, these rifles were never offered for public sale and remain highly coveted by collectors. Their limited production, combined with their direct association with a historic international competition held during America's Bicentennial, makes them a standout example of precision craftsmanship and competitive shooting heritage.

Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Palma Trophy Match is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious long-range rifle competitions in the world, with origins tracing back to 1873 at the Creedmoor Range in New York. The event began as an international challenge match between teams from the United States and Ireland and quickly evolved into a symbol of international marksmanship excellence. The formal Palma Trophy Match was established in 1876 by the National Rifle Association of America in celebration of the American Centennial, accompanied by the commissioning of a magnificent Roman-standard-style trophy from Tiffany & Co. The word “PALMA,” Latin for “victory” or “valor,” replaced “SPQR” on the trophy, becoming the match’s namesake. Held at distances of 800, 900, and 1,000 yards, the Palma Match has a long tradition of strict equipment standards, with notable rule changes over the years, including the requirement in 1968 for all competitors to use identical rifles provided by the host country.

In the years 1968, 1971, and 1976, the United States hosted the Palma Trophy Match and chose the Winchester Model 70, specially built by the Winchester Custom Shop, as the official match rifle. These rifles were highly specialized, featuring heavy-profile barrels with counter-bored muzzles, glass-bedded actions, free-floated barrels, and jeweled bolts. Unique among them, the 1976 rifles had receiver slots for clip loading and were marked with a special Palma Match roll-mark on the barrel, commemorating both the Centennial of the Palma Trophy Match and the United States Bicentennial. The front sight used was a Redfield International Match model mounted on an unusual two-step base. Only about 140 rifles were manufactured for the 1976 match, making them extremely rare and highly desirable. This particular example, once used by a member of the British team at Camp Perry in 1976, is not only historically significant due to its direct match use but also represents a rare chance to own a rifle that embodies the craftsmanship, precision, and legacy of international long-range competition.
