Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Winchester 9422, produced from 1972 to 2005, remains one of the most beloved lever-action rimfire rifles in history, embodying the spirit of the American West with its design and performance. By 1991, over 600,000 units had been produced, and by the end of its production, this number is estimated to have reached around 850,000. The 9422 was revered not only for its reliability and craftsmanship but also for its versatility in chamberings, offering models in .22 LR, .22 Mag, and even .17 HMR. Its design closely resembled that of the larger Model 94, making it an economical and functional counterpart in the .22 rimfire category. Over the years, various upgrades and models were introduced, such as the XTR with select walnut stocks and checkering, the Big Loop, Trapper, and laminate-stocked versions. The 9422’s popularity was also fueled by its utility; many hunters, like one Canadian companion, used the .22 Mag variant as a dependable truck gun for small to medium-sized game up to coyote-sized targets.

The Winchester 9422 was a well-built, mechanically sound rifle with a range of thoughtful features that set it apart from its peers. It had a forged receiver, a straight-grip walnut stock, and a 20½-inch barrel, which made it lightweight at just 6 pounds—half a pound lighter than the Model 94. It featured a tubular magazine that held up to 15 rounds of .22 Long Rifle or 21 rounds of .22 Short, making it ideal for extended shooting sessions. Additionally, the rifle’s solid-top receiver with grooved rails for scope mounts, its angled ejection system, and a detachable thumb extension on the hammer for easier scope use enhanced its practicality. The inclusion of a take-down feature for easy cleaning and storage and the addition of checkering in the 1980s only enhanced the 9422’s appeal. With its reputation for accuracy, ease of use, and nostalgic link to the lever-action rifles of the past, the Winchester 9422 became a classic in American firearm history.
