Bryant Ridge's Analysis:
The Colt Diamondback was introduced in 1966 as a deluxe double-action revolver and quickly earned a reputation as one of Colt’s most refined small-frame wheelguns. Built on the compact D-frame—shared with the Detective Special—the Diamondback offered shooters target-grade features in a lighter, more manageable package than the larger Python. It is distinguished by its ventilated rib, full-length barrel underlug, wide serrated target hammer, and fully adjustable sights, all of which contributed to its excellent balance and shootability. This 6-shot revolver with a swing-out cylinder was offered in both blued and nickel finishes, and its profile closely resembles a scaled-down Python, giving it an unmistakably elegant appearance.

This example, serial number D89210, was manufactured in 1976 and is chambered in .38 Special with a 4-inch vent rib barrel and nickel finish. While the Diamondback did not receive the same level of hand-tuning or the famed Royal Blue polish of the Python, it still reflects Colt’s high standard of craftsmanship during its golden era of revolver production. Discontinued in 1988, the Diamondback has become increasingly desirable among collectors for its limited production, classic styling, and connection to Colt’s legendary revolver lineage. With its combination of refined features, practical size, and unmistakable Colt heritage, the Diamondback remains a highly attractive and collectible revolver for enthusiasts and serious Colt collectors alike.
